Error VAN: RESTRICTION: 5

VAN: RESTRICTION: 5 occurs when HVCI (Hypervisor-Protected Code Integrity) fails to initialize on your PC.

HVCI, also known as Memory Integrity, is required for Vanguard to verify system integrity. If it cannot start correctly, Vanguard will block the game from launching.

This most commonly happens when:

  • NX/XD (No Execute / Execute Disable) is disabled in BIOS
  • Memory Integrity is turned off in Windows
  • Virtualization is not fully enabled
  • BIOS security settings are partially configured

IMPORTANT:

Even if TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot are enabled, this error can still occur if NX/XD is disabled.

Before editing your BIOS:

If you’re not familiar with navigating through your BIOS, please reach out to a professional. Incorrectly configuring BIOS settings can cause issues with your computer–including failure to start up.

The BIOS is highly variable depending on the brand and type of computer or motherboard you are using. So we highly recommend that you reach out to your computer or motherboard manufacturer's support resources to assist you.

Step 1 - Enable NX/XD in BIOS (Critical)

NX/XD must be enabled.

  1. Restart your PC
  2. During startup, repeatedly press:
    • Del, F2, F10, or Esc (varies by manufacturer)
  3. Enter the Advanced or CPU Configuration section
  4. Locate one of the following:
    • NX Mode (AMD)
    • Execute Disable Bit
    • XD
    • No Execute Memory Protection
  5. Set the option to Enabled
  6. Press F10 to Save and Exit
  7. Allow the system to restart

If NX/XD was disabled, this is likely the root cause.

Note: BIOS menus vary by manufacturer. If you are unsure, refer to your PC or motherboard manufacturer’s support documentation. Riot is not responsible for issues caused by modifying BIOS or UEFI settings.

Step 2 - Turn On Memory Integrity in Windows

Refer to the Enable HVCI/VBS Memory Integrity (Core Isolation) steps in our Error VAN: RESTRICTION article.

Step 3 - Confirm Virtualization Is Enabled

  1. Press Windows + R
  2. Type msinfo32
  3. Press Enter
  4. Confirm the following:
    • Virtualization-based Security > Running
    • Hypervisor detected > Yes

If either is not correct:

  1. Restart and enter BIOS again
  2. Navigate to Advanced > CPU Configuration
  3. Enable:
    • SVM Mode (AMD), or
    • Intel Virtualization Technology (VT-x)
  4. Save and Exit

Step 4 - Confirm Secure Boot and TPM 2.0

Check the status of your device's TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot in their respective articles.

Optional - Enable DEP in Windows

If needed:

  1. Right-click Start
  2. Select Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin)
  3. Enter bcdedit /set nx AlwaysOn
  4. Restart your PC

Note: This enables Windows Data Execution Prevention (DEP). It does not replace BIOS NX/XD. BIOS NX/XD must already be enabled.
