Background Patching

That's right—BACKGROUND PATCHING IS HERE! We'd say "mark your calendars," but with this convenient new feature, you won't have to!

We're sure you have questions, so let's jump into the answers:

Is background patching available for all Riot games?

Initially this feature will only support complete patching for VALORANT, starting NOW for Riot Client beta testers with a full launch in May 2023. League of Legends, Teamfight Tactics, and Legends of Runeterra all patch partially through Riot Client and then complete their updates within their game clients.

Background Patching will take care of the first part for you, but we need to tick a few more technical boxes to also automatically patch the game content itself. Don't worry, though—that's next on our list!

We'll also be rolling out Background Patching for Windows first with Mac support coming at a later date.

Do I need to have the Riot Client running for background patching to work?

Yep! While you can minimize Riot Client to the task bar to patch using fewer system resources, it must be running in order to update your games while you're AFK.

How do I enable/disable background patching?

Click the profile icon in the upper right corner of your Riot Client, select Settings, and check or uncheck the box per game to enable or disable background patching.

Can I choose which of my games stays up to date, or when the patcher can run?

Absolutely! Simply go to the settings for each game in the Riot Client and choose whether you want to enable auto-update or not.

What happens if I don't have enough hard drive space for a patch?

If the patcher discovers there's just not enough of those precious, precious megabytes to make it happen, it'll shoot you an error message. Once you've freed up some space, you can wait until the next automatic background patch cycle for it to restart (~60 minutes), or you can manually hit the patch button to get it going right when you've finished.

I have other questions!

Just keep an eye on this FAQ (along with your Riot Client Settings) for any additional updates.
